Re: Restoration of PS 109

Dear Mayor Bloomberg:

As a former student (Class of 92) from PS 109, (my 6th grade class was unable to have a graduation ceremony due to funds and/or the possibility of our school being demolished). It disappoints not only me but my fellow classmates whom had to leave the school due to the reported occurrences. My younger brother who also attended the school at the time had to face the overcrowd ness, he was sent to PS 50 (1996) and experienced what others students are facing today. Overcrowd ness is a <>REALITY in the community and the RESTORATION OF PS 109 WILL BENEFIT ALL SCHOOLS IN THE COMMUNITY. Your demographics are wrong and need to REALLY LOOK INTO THIS PROBLEM.

El Barrio community is a community with low-income families and the schools are OVERCROWDED, according to the Coalition to Save PS 109, this building could be used to provide 1,200 seats for our children rather than 64 artist lofts. The Community Education Council for District 4 has voted that this school should be included in the capital plan and returned to the community as a school. I agree 100% for the restoration of this precious and historic school. An Artist housing would not be adequate for this remarkable structure. This space has the needs for a school and a need for the children in the community.

You must understand that this community is need of a school that will serve small classrooms, as I once. This is will enable a much better communication between teachers and students. Students will be focused, enjoy a spacious atmosphere and have a will to succeed as I once did in the past. I myself am from immigrant parents who came to this country to seek employment and education. I was an honor student and the teachers who taught me were the best. Please take this into consideration. If your main priority is education for our children, why take away what should be for the children?

Restoring PS 109 should be 1rst priority. Artist lofts can be a 2nd / 3rd priority.

Yours truly,

DENISE RAMIREZ
